Expansion of Freshwater prawn hatchery at Kahandamodara, Hambantota

Construction work of expansion of the Freshwater Prawn hatchery at Kahandamodara was ceremonially begun on 19th October 2015 by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development with the participation of Mr. Upali Mohotti (Attorney-at- Law), Chairman of NAQDA.

This expansion will help to increase freshwater prawn post larvae production upto 40 million from the present production from 20 million. The objectives of this project is to increase the supply freshwater prawn seeds for the freshwater prawn aquaculture industry in Sri Lanka, to disseminate breeding technology of freshwater prawn to the  private entrepreneurs who have interest to run freshwater prawn hatchery, create livelihoods of the country and o earn the foreign exchange by export of freshwater prawn.
