Opening of the New Freshwater Prawn Hatchery, Kahandamodara

New Freshwater Prawn Hatchery, Kahandamodara in Hambantota District was ceremonially open by Hon. Mahinda Amaraweers, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development on 29th August 2016 with the participation of Hon. Dilip Wedaarachchi, State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Hon. H.W. Gunasena, Fisheries Minister of the Southern Province.

Mr. Upali Mohotti (Attorney-at-Law) Chairman NAQDA, Mr. Nimal Chandraratne, Director General NAQDA, Officers of NAQDA were also present at this event.

Through the establishment of new hatchery facility at Kahandamodara, stocking of post larvae of freshwater prawn in reservoirs and ponds will be increased.  So, the freshwater prawn production from the reservoirs and the ponds will be increased and income generation from exports will also be increased. Living standards of fisherman will also be increased. Total project cost was Rs. Mn 24.00. This expansion will help to increase freshwater prawn post larvae production upto 40 million from the present production from 20 million.
